Internet Marketing? Together We Will Succeed On Your Own It’s Harder?

When I started John Thornhill’s Masterclass in February this year and made my start on an Internet Marketing career I made my first Blog post on 10th February I was brim full of enthusiasm and highly motivated to succeed.

Early on in the course I had a number of challenges, not least my life being totally disrupted by damp proofing and building works which I was pleased to successfully use to motivate myself.

I made regular posts to my blog, I gave a weekly review of the Masterclass topics and regularly visited other students blogs to read up on how they were doing on the course, and to make encouraging comments etc.

Suddenly, and inexplicably, I have found that my blog posts become less frequent so that in July just gone I made NO BLOG POSTS at all!! An actually I am a little ashamed to say I don’t think I have made a single comment on anyone else’s blog either!

What sort of Internet Marketer does that make me?

I suspect, in fact, that I am actually a fairly ‘typical’ (normal) Internet Marketer?

We all need a prod or a kick up the b***side (K U T B) from time to time to motivate us and Internet Marketing like all ‘one man’ (or woman) businesses need a K U T B as much if not more than most………..WHY? ………..Well, the answer is simple really. Home workers are largely working on our own, from home and do not receive active stimulation from the workplace, with ‘healthy’ competition in the office for promotions etc. There are distractions everywhere and daily innumerable time wasting ‘excuses’ to either delay starting work or avoiding work alltogether.

I believe that women are generally far better at organising their daily activities than are men. Why? Goodness knows, but they are, certainly Judith is far better than me in our house and so are my elder daughters.

Me?

Well, any excuse to ‘skive off’ and I’m gone!

Even to the extent of mowing the lawn! Though drinking a cool beer and watching some sport on the TV is more pleasant!

I’m sure many readers can associate with what I am writing here………..

But don’t worry…………………help is at hand…………..

YOU need to find a group of like minded Internet Marketers who have a desire to succeed and join up with them, and together you may find that you can become part of your own ‘work group’ of like-minded people who are striving towards a similar goal in the same work niche of Internet Marketing.

Many of whom will at some point or other in their careers have gone through what you are experiencing and may even have written their experiences and told how they solved the ‘block’ that you are going through, and they may be able to help you to get through the tough times by offering their support and encouragement.

Such support groups do exist.

One such support group is I believe the ’100 blog comment challenge’ put together by Jacinta Dean and Steve King.

It’s a great idea and I’m pleased to have been invited to take part. The invite could not have come at a better time for me and will re-motivate me in my desire to become an Internet Marketer AND maybe even more importantly will also give me the opportunity to help others in some small way or other.

I should be delighted if you would tell me what has been your greatest challenge and how you have overcome the challenge.

Or, if you have a particular challenge currently and are looking for assistance in overcoming it?

Maybe, just maybe, someone reading your comment has been there already and can help you overcome it.

There is a strength in numbers, and we all need it every now and then.

Good luck all and I look forward to visiting your blogs soon.

With special thanks to Mandy Allen and Barry Wells for telling me of the challenge.

Richard

  1. Hi Richard, great post and so very true of all of us! I am the world’s best procrastinator I can assure you. Sport on the telly doesn’t really do it for me (although a cold Guinness and a sit in the garden will!).

My greatest challenge, that’s a hard one, I believe we are all faced with challenges all the time, we deal with them and often don’t remember them once they have been overcome. I guess in terms of IM one of the hardest times for me was when I was heavily involved in looking after 8 horses. Finding time to get on the internet as well as my day job and visiting and feeding/caring for the horses was hard. How did I sort it out? As I do with everything, I make a plan, have a routine and stick to it rigidly, never wavering from it, because once you do you’ve lost the momentum.

    Enjoy the journey.

    Mandy

  2. Hi Mandy,
Thanks for being the first of my 100 blog post commenters, I look forward to returning the compliment.
    I see I was correct!
You ladies are better organised than us guys (well me anyway!) and are able to make a plan, have a routine and stick to it not wavering and so no danger of losing your momentum!
Having 8 horses must help in a way as you are well used to routines feeding, riding and the fun part, mucking out! I see we have something in common as my wife and elder daughters are keen horsewomen too. So I’ve seen plenty of horse pooh too!
    cheers

  3. Hi Richard,

Fun Video and a great post :)
    Welcome to the challenge too….

As for getting things done – I tend to find if I partner up with people I get a long more done…
Left to my own devices – I’ll always think it’s too nice a day to work and go for a lovely walk instead… or if it’s raining – well then it’s too miserable a day to work – so a good film passes the time…LOL

Partnering up with others means someone is relying on me – hence I get stuck in. hehe

  4. Hi Richard, that’s a very well written and truthful post.

We all have a challenge at some point in our new careers. Mine has been my health issues, which last year put me on bed rest for 8 months. I haven’t got over the issues as yet and have to go back into hospital in 3 weeks time for another operation.

I don’t let them stop though as i have desire, for a new career and success. I stay positive and focused on my goals, yes at times the goals seem very far away but i know that with short steps as and when i can make them i will reach my goals.

Thanks for the mention Richard, appreciate it my friend.
I’ve added your details to my blog contributors page and would like to add you to my twitter list. Can you let me have your twitter name please so i can do so?

The video was fantastic Richard, can i just explain how to get it to fit your blog a little better?
When you’re on youtube and click the embed button, a drop down menu appears. From that menu you can select size and colours. The size i use is 480 x 385 and it fits very well.

Best of luck for the challenge Richard, please let me have your twitter name and i’ll sort the list out to include you.

  5. Hi Richard, got to tell you that is a good fun entertaining video.

One of my biggest challenges is time. I think I do a pretty good job at making time. I’m glad to say I’m not bored. I try my best to do something toward my Internet business everyday, large or small. Doing SOMETHING keeps me sane.

If I don’t get time during the day. I make time at night. The fuel for all this is, it all depends how bad you want it. This is what fuels me. What does your gut tell you?

If you don’t have that fuel especially when you run into road blocks, hardships, etc… nothing will ever get done. I hope this helps anyone reading.

As I can see Richard you certainly have it in you to succeed. If you ever need a K U T B just ask :)

    Hey Richard
Great post! I am sure everyone can relate to what you have written here. I love the video on social media something that I would also like to use in an up coming post. Now as for my greatest challenge I have already shared on another blog as part of this 100 challege I recently took a bungy leap of a 360 metre tower in Macua China.
I found that a challenging experience. What I learned out of this experience was that the thought process was actually worse than doing the jump. I procrastinated all week about doing it and it nearly made me sick with worry. It just comes down to the famous saying Just Do It!

  8. Hi Stan,
Thanks for visiting and your valuable comment
Procrastination, that thief is everywhere we are, and MUST be overcome before we can move forward
I think I would still be procrastinating about climbing the tower never mind the jump!
Your tale reminds me of when I did a parachute jump in the 70′s (yes, I’m in my 50′s now!) I was so terrified on the way up, I fixated on the pilot’s glove that had a name written on it (his? I never did find out though) – Gregg – the instructors told me afterwards they thought I wouldn’t get out of the plane and I was to be the first of 4 jumpers.
When I did get out, the parachute opened thank goodness, and I floated to the ground, all too quickly, I thought it was the most glorious experience, and I wanted to have another go again straight away!
I never did though and suspect I would have to go through the whole fear process again too!
    Thanks for sharing.
    see you soon
    Richard
    ps thanks for the tweet!

  9. Hi Terry,
Thanks for visiting and your valuable contribution.
Your right, finding time to do my internet business is a challenge for me also.
One of my particular challenges is that my fuel supply doesn’t always fire on all cylinders all the time and that is where our enemy procrastination suddenly appears and before I know it I have run out of fuel again.
    Thanks for your offer of a K U T B I think I’ll need a regular KICK!
I find making a list of tasks very useful too writing them down in front of me means I see them all the time too!
    cheers

Thank you for visiting and your comment. Indeed, thank you for inviting me and remotivating me!
I’m sorry to hear you have had health issues. I think that of all personal assets one’s health is the most important. we take our health for granted far too often and only notice it when something goes wrong and then we expect an instant cure too!
I feel sure that you will overcome your issues, and if I can help in any small way please just shout and I’ll do my best to be there for you.
Together we can succeed on our its harder is the title of my post after all!
Thanks for your advice re fitting the you tube video, i know i could have sorted it out with a little care!!

  11. Hi Richard,

No posting for a whole month, shame on you.
I was reading a report from I can’t remember who. A well respected blogger, I think Brian Clark from Copyblogger.
Brian says that consistency is key to blogging. If you post daily stick to it, if you post weekly stick to it. He actually recommended weekly so you can concentrate on other work.
This 100 comment challenge has been amazing for me, you are my 42nd blog in 2 days. I have really enjoyed it, I now have all these blogs in a swipe file. I will continue to visit them on a regular basis.

Visiting 42 blogs in 2 days must be close to a record!
How did you manage to read all the posts AND do your own work?
My aim is to visit just 3, 4, or 5 a day!
I don’t know Brian Clark but I’m sure he is right in suggesting consistency, and my view would be to post weekly and concentrate on quality not quantity?
Each to their own has to be the way of course as we are all different.
Look forward to your return here and to visiting your blog.

  14. Hi Richard
Great video…I’ve had the tune in my head for a while now :)

I would say the biggest obstacle in my own business was doing too much all at the same time. I now do my best to complete a project before I start the next one.

The best thing that I did in my business was to bring in people who had the skill sets that I didn’t. My Weekend Golfers company now has six people working on different aspects, and all working together to make the company a success.

Internet marketing business is just so overwhelming, I am learning new stuff every day, and it’s nothing like the actual job we are doing in the company. I am a sales person who only make sales on the flash memory and what we exchange with customers are only production information. But through the online blog, we exchange our opinions toward life or career, I think this is more valuable info we are sharing. Regarding the 100 comment challenge, I am excited and couldn’t wait to visit more friend’s blog.

  17. Hi Richard,

Don’t be too hard on you man. My blog went blank for 4-5 months from Feb to Jun for a lot of reasons. I figure that I only want to post as and when I have something of value to my readers and not just having too many personal rants even though the blog is with my name on it.

I worked really hard “behind the scene” during all this time to gear up for a better momentum this time round. But like you said, having a group of people to support you is very important for us to stay motivated. The new comments that appear on Jun on my Jan/Feb post did more or less pushed me to work faster to get things going.

May the challenge pump you up with more than enough Juice for you to run fast and long this time round.

    Cheers

A little about me – My name is Sue McDonald and I am a student of Mark Terrell and I am actually going through the course a second time – by invitation. I love it and know if I do all he says, I will be successful. I am Australian but the US is my second home as I have family there and visit quite often. This is why I started Internet Marketing so I can travel whenever I want and have the money to do what I want.

Well I hope you are doing well and you become very successful. I would love you to come visit my blog and leave a comment.

Yes I am Mark Terrell and I am following my students as they post on other peoples blogs. They don’t know that I am always checking to see they are getting results. I am passionate about helping them achieve and then they are able to make some money online exactly the same as I am doing. It is not really difficult as long as they are willing to put in the effort.

    Keep up the good work.

It is true that internet marketing can be a very lonely game at times and having worked as part of a team in my previous job I do miss the motivation that comes from achieving team targets.

I suppose the solution for me is to interact with as many people as possible during my work, Skype is excellent for this.

Our 100 comment challenge is also a great way to get to know new people with a common goal.

Knowing myself to be lazy, I decided to just concentrate on one thing at a time. Blogging was the first thing, and now it’s easy and second nature to me I have just moved on to step 2, submitting articles. When that becomes easy I will attempt an eBook, but not before.

I think my greatest challenge recently has been to avoid information overload with internet Marketing, which is all new to me. I solved it by taking things slowly. Internet Marketing is a marathon not a sprint.

  40. Hi Richard,
I don’t know if I would call it lazy….life happens and when we aren’t making any money or getting any subscribers to our online biz, we tend to push it to the side.
I think we are all guilty of that! Blog hopping and reading comments takes time. Time is a very precious commodity. Especially when folks have to work all day and have kids to deal with! Like 6 of them!!
That’s why we like automation. but you have to learn that first and that takes time, too!!
Then there is the relationship building, the website tweaking, the testing…all of it takes up time.

So while folks are learning, the blog posts and blog comments get put to the side. maybe not lazy. Just busy!! :)

I bet if blog posting put another 5k in your pocket each month, you would find the time and all other things would get put to the side!!

  42. How Do Richard,

Don’t blame yourself that you do not do much or get side tracked. The majority of us are busy with life in general. If we were all full time into Internet Marketing then we would have plenty of time to get things done.

For now we have to juggle many things and can sometimes only give our Internet Marketing a few hours a day or even a week. You need to use that time to be the most effective.

One way I have found is that I bought a white board and write down daily task’s to do to reach my monthly goals. Even if it is only little things it is a progression. When you see them in front of you written down and you see them each day you will get them done know matter what.

Your subconscious mind goes to work for some reason and it will eat away at you until you have completed the task.

Procrastination is never a pretty thing…but those of us that work at home have to find a way to control that “demon” that chooses to steal our time away…
On the other hand…I do believe…especially in the beginning as we are getting a foot-hold on blogging that these are stages that we will all experience. What we must remember is to not judge ourselves too harshly and just get back on the “horse” as soon as possible.

Blogging should be fun…we must take occasional breaks and I do believe our minds and bodies will tell us when we need a break. It’s then that we must listen…

My greatest challenge by far in the blogging world has been to learn all this techie stuff. Not easy for a grandmother of 3! But, I never gave up…through all the fears, tear, and curses! And, I marvel at what I can do now ;)

    Good luck with the challenge!

I am now waiting for someone else to let me have something that I need for a project that I am working on. I can’t move forward with it until I get all these things in place. It’s very frustrating.

I think it pays to remember that if you say you are going to do something then you should. It’s not good for your reputation if you don’t. I would not use these people again.

  49. Hi Richard,

Whilst I have been internet marketing for over the last 10 years and since early 2003 full time one of the best things to happen in recent times was the formation of a mastermind.

By this I mean a group of marketers meet up every 3 months to make ourselves accountable to each other and brain storm difficulties / ideas in their businesses. We also connect via teleconferences once a month.

We meet up at different places in the UK so as the amount of travelling is shared over time.

In summary if you can find at least one other person you can become accountable to you will undoubtedly become more productive.

    All the best

    Cheers

We certainly are becoming a very online social world. Partnerships like this one where we help each other with comments is what it is all about. Everyone has something to share and a reason why blogging has become so popular.

    Best wishes

  52. Hi Richard
This 100-blog comment challenge is just what I needed to get me going. I hadnt posted to my blog for over a year and although I visited other mastermind blogs I hadnt got into the habit of leaving comments. Now in the past few weeks all that has changed. Brilliant idea.
It is now only a matter of keeping the change.
Enjoy the challenge and good luck in your business.

  55. Hi Richard,

So far I’ve kept my momentum going. I’ve been working on building a business since January and kept plugging along with the help of a Master Mind group I am blessed to be part of.

Things really picked up for me a few weeks ago though as I started a coaching program with Mark Terrell. I can see how what I’ve learned on my own over the past few months fits in. That put me ahead of the curve. The most important part is filling in the blanks and that’s what Mark has done for me. I expect to continue to work hard and learn even more over the coming weeks.

I agree, relaxing with a cold brew is nice, but succeeding in my own business will be even better!

  56. Hi Richard,

Don’t worry if you haven’t blog or commented on other people’s blog last month.

If you didn’t because you preferred watching sports on TV or playing games online then it makes you a “lazy Internet Marketer”.

On the other hand if you haven’t blog because you had to create your product or build your list then it makes you a “smart Internet Marketer” that wants to succeed! The most important thing in this business is creating your own products and building your list and your websites.

Blogging is also important but you have to consecrate on other things too.

Also I think all of us need inspiration and spend time with minded marketers that have a desire to succeed. With inspiration we are getting motivated to get work done and grow our business.

    Take care,
    Andreas

  57. Hi Richard,

One thing I definitely agree is that women are better in organising the daily dairy or activities.

A real life example – I have been busy with my day job and on the course with Alex Jeffreys from April onwards, and we had to move home closer to my office.

My wife took complete charge single handedly to organise property viewing, finalising an apartment, packing at the old house, cooking some extra dishes since we would not have time and it wouldn’t be convenient to have food at a restaurant daily after we moved, cleaning up the old house (and that itself was a project as it had 2 gardens and was huge), shifting to the new place, cleaning the new place of how we’d like it to be, unpack, and then finally start studying again … and there are a few things that I missed as well.

The reason I mention this long list is because it was a 2.5 months task altogether and she planned exactly how and when everything would be done WITHIN the said timelines … and she is a very hard working person who keeps her focus.

I was amazed. This taught me so much …. how I should be taking up my internet business, not jumping around and getting loaded with information, etc etc etc. The main points are
    - have a plan
    - follow the plan
    - be focussed

that’s it .. you should not lose your vision ..

I think I digressed from the topic but just went on with the flow.

    Cheers!

  58. Hello Richard, I enjoyed your article and the video was off the hook! You’re so right about the power of a supportive community. Our blogging network is growing into a blogging community and it’s great to be a part of it all.

Many fellow bloggers are posting one good article per month, myself included. I’d like to increase to 2 per month, once a week and eventually 2 or 3 times a week. It takes time to find true north and when we do it becomes easier to write everyday. So, for me, time becomes more and more valuable as I use it more wisely. Time can be an obstacle (the lack of that is) or an asset.

Good luck with the challenge ahead and be well, Steve D.

  61. Hi Richard,

    Such a cool video!

I finally got here! Have been a little busy with this challenge of mine! Oops on that one! I didn’t realise how time consuming it was going to be. I have to visit 60 blogs before the end of August! definite oops on that one!

Creating a business online takes time, determination, dedication and focus. It is not as easy as people think it is. I still consider myself a newbie always learning always growing, and it is definitely not a business yet, more like a hobby.

However in saying that, I do know that one day it will be a business, just got to find more time!! :D

Hope the challenge is going well for you. Now that we have all the contributors I just hope everyone gets around to everyone’s blogs so we all succeed together. It is up to all the contributors now!

  69. Hi Richard, really good video & very entertaining. To quote Jacinta in a previous post…Creating a business online takes time, determination, dedication and focus. – Never a truer word said, With all the KUTB’s I’ve had recently I should be black & blue. The main thing is that you have to learn to run your life and business in harmony with each other, sounds easy but hey! it’s taking it’s time. The word FOCUS is the word I use everytime I turn on the laptop, this stops me from wandering around this fantastic invention called the internet. Support from those around you is imperative, My wife always asks if I am ‘pratting’ today – her terminology for wasting time, She has now come to terms with the fact I am researching to build our more secure future. Great post Richard, full of insight.

  70. Hey Richard, are you familiar with the idea that women and men represent different aspects of creation? Men are said to be the physical, while women are the spiritual. That means men tend to be more outwardly oriented, looking outside for inspiration and knowledge, while woman go inward. Of course both genders blend these abilities, but that does seem to be the general rule. Realizing that helps me interact with others and to watch for habits within myself.

Thankfully, both genders are proving themselves able to balance both aspects. We are equally able to look inward for inspiration, and to go outward to create community and help others. How flipping cool and encouraging is that?!

So, my biggest challenge? A lifelong theme for me is to let my big, bold, beautiful authentic self shine. Even when it seems controversial or unpopular. I work on it a bit every day, and share what I have learned with others who cross my path. I find strength both in tribes of likeminded souls and in quiet time alone. In everything, I find it’s healing to seek a balance.

May all of our future ventures bring growth, adventure, and forever growing success.

  74. Hi Richard

Women manage their time better than men? This woman certainly doesn’t! Time management and procrastination are definitely my biggest challenges.

As you say, teaming up with other people is useful. Take this blog challenge for instance, even though it’s close to the end of the month and, true to form, I’m only just over halfway through, I will complete it because I’ve made that commitment to the rest of the group.

However, if this challenge hadn’t existed and I had just decided “oh, I think I’ll comment on 100 blogs this month” I’d probably not have got beyond 20 because there’d be no pressure, nothing driving me on. But as I have a mental image of the other 101 Challengers standing over me with a big whip saying “you WILL visit all the blogs!”, then I’ll crack on until it’s done :-)

I’ll see you at the finishing line.

    Kind Regards

No procrastinating is not a good thing but we’re all guilty at some time or another. We just need to make sure it doesn’t become a habit. Although I suffer from some procrastination, I more suffer from distraction. I’ll be working…but not on what I planned on or need to be working on.

There are so many distractions when working from home. The kids, telly, phone ringing and the temptation to surf the net rather than do some work online.

I personally plan my day the night before with a list of what I want to get done that day and when I’ve completed my tasks I cross them off. Also if I’ve got a big job to do I break it into smaller chunks so that its not so daunting.

  89. Richard, like anything in life we will put time into those things we value. If someone launches out into IM or any other type of web-based business enterprise, there needs to be a clear picture of how that enterprise will produce value in return for the time and money invested. When the perceived value is unclear, and sometimes unknown, motivation is difficult to muster.

Having a clear picture in mind makes it easier to find the passion and motivation to keep on keeping on.

  92. Hi Richard,

Great post and I was the same when I first started my blog. Posting every couple of days, posting about the Masterclass lessons, I was full of enthusiasm and excitement. Then it happened – I was hit by the writers blog syndrome and didn’t know what to write. The product creation side of John’s course really knocked me, I wrote ten pages of my ebook and then stopped.

Thankfully the 100 Comment Challenge has come along, I have visited some really great blog and learnt so much and my enthusiasm is starting to return. The main reason my enthusiasm is returning is the incredible comments that I have received on my challenge post. I no longer feel that I am doing this by myself, there are other people out there who have been through the same problems and they have survived and so will I and so will you.

I am looking forward to returning to your blog very soon and I hope you have enjoyed the challenge.

  99. Hi Richard,

What you say is so true and it is no wonder why so many new Internet marketers give up on their dream just a few months into starting their online business.

I did strugggle with this same problems of having very little human interaction working from home in the early stsges of my business. Luckily I now employ serveral virtual assistants that I am in constant contact with and find as my business grows it is much easier to get self-motivated but you need to get to that point first and that can be the hardest part.

My advice would be: DON’T GIVE UP and find yourself a suitable enviroment to work in, perhaps a local busy coffee shop with Wifi, anything that allows you to change your envoriment a little every now and again.

It took me a extended time previous to I started to produce a good cash online, but I had family issues and I stopped to your year. I then came back and had no clue what to do. What I discovered is really a good method to make money – this is not a scam and it took me an hour to set up – I’m so pleased I find this loophole simply because I have created around $3000/month.
